About Uganda

Uganda is a landlocked country in East Africa, often referred to as the “Pearl of Africa” due to its stunning natural beauty and rich biodiversity. The capital and largest city is Kampala, located near Lake Victoria, it is the country’s administrative, economic, and political center.

  • Wildlife and Natural Beauty: Uganda is famous for its diverse landscapes, including the source of the Nile River, Africa’s largest lake (Lake Victoria), and the Rwenzori Mountains, also known as the “Mountains of the Moon.” The country is a top safari destination with an abundance of wildlife, including the “Big Five” (lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros, and buffalo).
  • Mountain Gorillas: Uganda is home to over half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population, primarily in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Gorilla trekking is a major tourist attraction.

  • Cultural Diversity: With over 50 different ethnic groups, Uganda has a rich cultural tapestry. Each group has its own unique traditions, languages, music, and dances.

  • Adventure Activities: The city of Jinja, located at the source of the Nile, is considered the “Adventure Capital of Uganda” and offers activities like white-water rafting, kayaking, and bungee jumping.

  • Ethnic Groups: The largest ethnic group is the Baganda, who have a strong cultural influence and are known for their traditional kingdom and vibrant music and dance. Other prominent groups include the Banyankole, Basoga, and Acholi.

  • Kingdoms: Uganda’s history is marked by the existence of powerful kingdoms, such as the Buganda, Bunyoro, and Ankole, which had organized social structures before the arrival of British colonialists in the late 19th century.

  • Colonialism and Independence: Uganda was a British protectorate until it gained independence in 1962. The country’s post-independence history was marked by political turmoil, including the brutal dictatorship of Idi Amin in the 1970s.

  • Kibale Forest National Park: Considered one of the best places in the world for chimpanzee tracking.
  • Kasubi Tombs: A UNESCO World Heritage Site in Kampala that serves as the burial ground for four kings of the Buganda Kingdom.

Mihingo Lodge

A magical, eco safari lodge built on a private property that borders Lake Mburo National Park. It has 12 beautiful, tented rooms with a large veranda and a proper round bathroom with a gorgeous view of the wilderness. All rooms are nestled into the landscape in carefully chosen locations, far apart from one another providing a very private and yet wild safari experience.

You can be naked on your veranda or in your bathroom without any of the other guests or staff being able to see you. Placed in varied settings, some rooms are situated in a forest with views of the waterhole beyond, some have a lake view, some are on a level with the animals and others on rocky outcrops.

The lodge has lots of places where you can enjoy the surrounding African savannah; an open dining room with a spectacular view across the valley, a cosy bar, a tower with two levels, the bushbaby platform amongst leafy trees, a thatched massage room, as well as a swimming pool with breathtaking views over the waterhole where you can watch animals drinking as you too sip your favourite drink.
