About Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a Central American nation known for its stunning natural beauty, commitment to conservation, and “Pura Vida” (pure life) lifestyle. It is a popular destination for eco-tourism and adventure travel.

Geography and Climate

Eco-Tourism: Costa Rica is a pioneer in eco-tourism, attracting visitors who want to experience its natural landscapes and wildlife. Popular activities include hiking, zip-lining, white-water rafting, surfing, and wildlife watching.

Location: Costa Rica is an isthmus with coastlines on both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. It is bordered by Nicaragua to the north and Panama to the southeast.

Terrain: The country’s geography is diverse, with coastal plains separated by a rugged central mountain range that includes numerous volcanoes. The terrain features tropical rainforests, cloud forests, dry tropical forests, and beaches with sand of various colors.

Climate: Costa Rica has a tropical climate, but its varied elevation creates several microclimates. There are two main seasons:

Dry season (“summer”): Roughly from December to April, with sunny and hot days, especially along the Pacific coast.

Rainy season (“green season”): From May to mid-November, with rain often occurring in the afternoons.
The Central Valley, where most of the population lives, has a pleasant, spring-like climate year-round.

High Biodiversity: Despite its small size, Costa Rica is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, home to about 5% of the planet’s species.

Protected Lands: A significant portion of the country’s land (over 25%) is protected within national parks and wildlife reserves, making it a leader in eco-tourism and conservation.

Wildlife: The country is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, with a wide variety of animals and birds, including sloths, monkeys, toucans, macaws, and jaguars.
Economy and Tourism

Economic Drivers: Costa Rica has a stable and diversified economy. While it once relied heavily on agriculture (coffee, bananas, pineapples), its economy is now driven by tourism, electronics and medical component exports, and IT services.

Tourism: Tourism is a crucial part of the economy and a major source of foreign exchange. The country is the most visited nation in Central America, with millions of visitors each year. The sector contributes significantly to the country’s GDP and employment.
