Mihingo is a magical, eco safari lodge

Built on a private property that borders Lake Mburo National Park. It has 12 beautiful, tented rooms with a large veranda and a proper round bathroom with a gorgeous view of the wilderness. All rooms are nestled into the landscape in carefully chosen locations, far apart from one another providing a very private and yet wild safari experience.

You can be naked on your veranda or in your bathroom without any of the other guests or staff being able to see you. Placed in varied settings, some rooms are situated in a forest with views of the waterhole beyond, some have a lake view, some are on a level with the animals and others on rocky outcrops.

The lodge has lots of places where you can enjoy the surrounding African savannah, an open dining room with a spectacular view across the valley, a cosy bar, a tower with two levels, the bushbaby platform amongst leafy trees, a thatched massage room, as well as a swimming pool with breathtaking views over the waterhole where you can watch animals drinking as you too sip your favourite drink.

More About Our Lodge

Mihingo is a family owned lodge in a magical setting with very private rooms adjacent to Lake Mburo National Park. Perched high on a rocky kopje, whose pre-Cambrian granite boulders were formed over 500 million years ago, it has spectacular views over a vast savannah landscape.  Designed to blend in with its fragile surroundings, this environmentally friendly lodge offers comfort, relaxation and the experience of being at one with nature.

An infinity pool overlooks the valley below where buffalo, eland, impala, warthogs, bush buck and zebra can be seen at the waterhole.  On the rocks you may have the rare chance of seeing the resident family of Klipspringers.  We cannot guarantee that you will see a leopard, but on a night game drive you do have a good chance. As Rungwe Kingdon (the son of the well-known wildlife author, Jonathan Kingdon, and one of Mihingo’s guests) once told us “I have seen more leopards in Lake Mburo National Park than any other park in East Africa”.

One of the most exciting activities are our horseback safaris and walking with giraffes in Lake Mburo National Park. Walking safaris starting from Mihingo Lodge, night game drives and boat trips are also very popular and there are some great game drives with lovely viewpoints.

The only regret that many of our guests have is that they wish they had booked to stay longer than only a night or two. We hope this website will help you to see how many wonderful things there are to do when you stay at Mihingo Lodge.

Accommodation

Mihingo Lodge has 12 luxury, tented rooms designed to provide guests with privacy and tranquillity. Each room has its own unique charm and character, whether it is nestled in forest, overlooking the lake, perched on a rocky outcrop or down by the water hole. Although no two rooms are the same, Suni and Ralph have ensured they all share stunning views and provide guests with a light and airy sanctuary and a feeling of being alone in the bush.

Each spacious canvas tent is equipped with en-suite bathrooms, hot and cold running water, showers, and flush loos. The rooms have been sensitively designed to complement the local environment with great attention to detail. The doorways are framed by stunning pieces of dead olive wood found on the land.

The outside walls reflect the colours of the African soil, created with the help of a specialist from Lamu who mixed natural coloured pigments into the cement. Several of the rooms dramatically incorporate the granite boulders into the design of the bathrooms. As an environmentally friendly lodge all the lights are solar powered and each room has its own solar powered water heater.

Bush Buck and Impala have their own salt lick allowing guests to sit on their balcony and watch animals come and go. Buffalo and Water Hole rooms are situated down on the grassy plain, near the water. They are the furthest rooms from the lodge but they are very private and closer to the animals.

We offer early morning tea or coffee brought to your room so you can take in the surrounding nature sitting on your spacious veranda before going for breakfast, a game drive or any of our other activity.

Dining

The spacious, thatched dining area sits on top of the rocky kopje, heralding a bird’s eye view over the park and beyond. A steady breeze from Lake Kacheera makes it one of the coolest places in the lodge on a hot day. Overlooking a waterhole and saltlick, it is a perfect spot to enjoy delicious food and watch wildlife at the same time.

Suni designed the bar area in which a cement sofa curves around the existing granite rocks and small niches with paraffin lights add sparkle and a sense of cosiness.

Most importantly the bar is extremely well stocked so it is more than likely we can serve you your favourite tipple with a bowl of homemade nibbles. Our wine list boasts many South African wines and a few Australian. Michael, our head barman, reportedly makes the best Irish coffee ever!

Mihingo’s reputation for good food is very much thanks to Suni’s wonderful mother Sarah. She was an excellent cook and trained the local Mihingo chefs on how to make the exceptional recipes she had gathered over the years from friends and family around the world.

The food at Mihingo is a fusion of different cultures, herbs and spices. Sarah was great at using the best local produce to create fantastic dishes. Lunches are 3 courses. The starter is often a delicious chilled soup, followed by a selection of crisp, fresh salads, cold meats and vegetarian quiches, and then there is always a scrummy pudding. Dinner is also a 3 course meal. Some of the lodge favourites are the feta and coriander samosas with home-made tomato pickle, smoked Nile Perch from Lake Victoria served with a simple olive-oil, lemon juice and caper dressing, grilled beef fillet from the famous Ankole cows and sticky toffee pudding.

Breakfasts at Mihingo are designed to set guests up for the day. There is always a selection of fresh fruit, fruit juice, cereals and muesli, home-made yoghurt, pancakes with a hint of lemon zest, eggs of your choice and the full fry up with home-made bread.

The lodge can cater to any dietary requirements be it vegetarian, gluten free, vegan or lactose intolerant. Just let us know any food you cannot eat or you dislike and we will prepare something to your taste. Early suppers can be arranged for children and babysitters can be organised to sit in the rooms so parents can eat later and relax.

Mihingo has its own vegetable and herb garden which is 100% organic. All the salads that guests eat are from the garden and as fresh as can be.

We have set up an aqua-ponics system with a solar pump circling the water around the fish tanks, gravel beds and trenches. Floating beds of mint and lettuce cover the trenches while mint also grows in the gravel beds. Tilapias are bred in the tanks, and one day we hope to supply the lodge with our very own fish.

In charge of the garden is Mugisha who has quite the greenest thumb. He keeps the veggetables growing, the monkeys out and the caterpillars from munching it all.

Safari

Mihingo Lodge offers the largest variety of activities possible in any National Park in Uganda. From exhilarating horse rides with many different options, exciting walking safaris, night game drives with a chance of seeing some of the nocturnal animals, various different game drives including one with a walk onto a stunning viewing point, a lovely boat trip with hundreds of hippos and lots of birds, relaxing massages, a walk to the hide near the waterhole and the chance to watch bush babies in the evening from the platform below the bar.

Jogging and mountain bike tours are also possible outside the Park and we offer walks to a Bahima home with a little insight into rural life in this area. There are eighteen different activities to explore at Mihingo Lodge so you will need several days to experience a few of all we have to offer.

Game Drives within the park.
There are many beautiful drives to explore in the Park either heading out yourself with a map, with a guide or hiring the lodge open sided Landrover. Research Track is one of our favourite drives where you are likely to see buffalo wallowing in the mud, zebra, impala, topi, bush buck, reed buck, oribi and warthog.

For spectacular views, park at the bottom of Kazuma look-out and walk up to the top; from here the view is stunning and you can see 5 lakes including Lake Mburo. For some 4 x 4 driving during the rainy season Eland track is the most challenging.

Game Drives outside the park.
It is both a cultural and a wildlife experience going on a game drive outside the park. You will pass homesteads, farmers herding their cattle, kids walking to school and motorbikes ferrying people to and fro. In amongst this wildlife roams about freely; zebras, impalas, topi, warthogs, waterbuck and even the shy eland are all possible to spot.

Night game drive.
Lake Mburo is one of the few parks where you can go on a night game drive! At night there is a whole variety of animals that you would not see in the day including bush pigs, genet cat and white tailed mongoose to mention but a few. Night drives also give you the best chance of finding leopards, spotted hyena and there is one male lion in the park who resides down by Lake Mburo itself. It is an interesting experience out at night with a spotlight, an unusual twist on your regular game drives.

Please inform us in time, so we can organize your night drive as it is mandatory to have a guide for all night drives. Also, there are only a limited number of spotlights so get in touch as early as possible to avoid disappointment. Night drives can be done in your own vehicle or in the Mihingo safari vehicle.

The birdlife is also prolific with many water birds living at the livestock dams. Large groups of crested cranes take up residence in the rainy season and even the shoebill can sometimes be seen in the wetlands. We will always send a guide with you to navigate through the criss-crossing and sometimes confusing roads and help you through the muddy patches that crop up in the rainy season. A game drive outside the park is useful if your park entry has expired and you would just like to go for a little spin!
