Geography and Economy
- Geography: Botswana is a flat country, with up to 70% of its land covered by the Kalahari Desert. It is bordered by South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The country is famous for its diverse landscapes, including savannas, deserts, and wetlands. A major geographical feature is the Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world’s largest inland deltas.
- Economy: At the time of its independence in 1966, Botswana was one of the world’s poorest countries. However, the discovery of significant diamond deposits shortly after independence transformed its economy. The country has since maintained steady economic growth and is considered an upper-middle-income country. Its economy is heavily reliant on mineral revenues, particularly diamonds. Other key sectors include tourism and agriculture.
Politics and Government - Capital: The capital and largest city is Gaborone.
- Government: Botswana is a multi-party parliamentary republic.
- Current Leadership: The current president is Duma Boko, who took office on November 1, 2024. He is the first president not to belong to the Botswana Democratic Party, which had ruled since independence.
- People and Language: The country is named after its dominant ethnic group, the Tswana, who make up the majority of the population. The official language is English, while Setswana is the national language and is widely spoken.
- Cultural Heritage: Botswana’s culture is rich in music, dance, and crafts. Traditional music often features instruments like the Segaba (a string instrument) and the Setinkane (thumb piano). A key cultural and political institution is the kgotla, a communal meeting place for discussion and decision-making.
- History: Before its independence in 1966, Botswana was a British protectorate known as Bechuanaland. It has since gained international recognition as a peaceful and prosperous democratic state, a rarity in the African context.
