If Marlborough is the “sunny wine country,” the West Coast (or “The Coast,” as locals call it) is its wild, untamed sibling. It is a narrow strip of land sandwiched between the Tasman Sea and the Southern Alps, famous for its dramatic scenery, heavy rainfall, and laid-back “Coaster” culture. Here are the absolute highlights of the West Coast.
The Glaciers (Franz Josef & Fox): This is one of the few places on Earth where you can see glaciers descending into temperate rainforests.
Heli-Hiking: Because the glaciers have retreated significantly, the best way to touch the ice is via helicopter. They drop you on the glacier for a guided walk through ice caves.
Lake Matheson: Located near Fox Glacier, this is the most photographed lake in NZ. On a calm day, it provides a perfect “mirror” reflection of Mount Cook and Mount Tasman.
Punakaiki (The Pancake Rocks): Located in Paparoa National Park, these are 30-million-year-old limestone formations that look like giant stacks of pancakes.
The Blowholes: Visit at high tide. The ocean surges into caverns beneath the rocks and shoots out through vertical vents like geysers. It’s loud, wet, and incredible.
Hokitika & The Blue Gorge
**Pounamu (Greenstone): Hokitika is the best place to buy or even carve your own pounamu. The riverbeds here are where much of this sacred stone is found.
Hokitika Gorge: A short drive inland takes you to water so vivid and turquoise it looks fake. There’s a swing bridge and a walk through lush Rimu forest.
The Haast Pass: The drive from the West Coast toward Wanaka/Queenstown is one of the most scenic in the world.
Waterfalls: The road is lined with easy-access falls like Thunder Creek Falls and Fantail Falls.

The Sandflies: They are legendary and ruthless. Buy local repellent (like Goodbye Sandfly) as soon as you arrive. Standard bug spray often doesn’t cut it.
The Weather: It is one of the wettest places in the world. When it rains, it pours. Embrace the mist—it makes the rainforests look like a scene from Jurassic Park.
