The Tasman region, located at the top northwestern corner of the South Island, is often described as New Zealand’s “sunshine capital.” It is a place where rugged mountains meet golden-sand beaches and turquoise waters, offering some of the most accessible and stunning coastal scenery in the country.
The Three National Parks: Tasman is unique because it contains (or borders) three very distinct national parks, making it a playground for hikers and nature lovers:
Abel Tasman National Park: New Zealand’s smallest but most popular national park. It is world-famous for its coastal track, golden granite sand, and clear water. Most people explore it via sea kayak or water taxi.
Kahurangi National Park: The second-largest park in the country, featuring wild rivers and herb fields. It was a major filming location for The Lord of the Rings (specifically for the “Dimrill Dale” and “Eregion” scenes).
Nelson Lakes National Park: Located at the southern end of the region, it features the stunning alpine lakes Rotoiti and Rotoroa, surrounded by beech forests and craggy peaks.
Geography & Climate
The Sun: Tasman (along with neighboring Nelson) consistently competes for the title of the sunniest place in New Zealand, enjoying long, warm summers and crisp, clear winters.
Golden Bay: Tucked over the “Takaka Hill” (a steep, winding marble mountain), Golden Bay is a remote, laid-back paradise. It is home to Te Waikoropupū Springs, which have some of the clearest fresh water ever measured in the world.
Farewell Spit: A 35 km long sand spit that curves into the Tasman Sea. It is a protected bird sanctuary and a dramatic landscape of shifting dunes.
Economy: Hops, Apples, and Artisans: The region’s fertile plains and high sunshine hours make it a powerhouse for horticulture:
Hops: This is the only place in New Zealand where hops are grown commercially. Because of this, the region is the heart of the nation’s craft brewing scene.
Apples and Berries: The Motueka and Moutere areas are famous for vast orchards and berry farms.
Creative Community: Like its neighbor Nelson, Tasman is home to a huge density of potters, painters, and glassblowers. The “Moutere Artisans” are a famous collective of local producers making everything from sheep’s cheese to handmade baskets.
Major Towns
Richmond: The fast-growing service hub for the region, located just south of Nelson city.
Motueka: The gateway to Abel Tasman National Park and a bustling horticultural town.
Takaka: The quirky, colorful main town of Golden Bay, known for its hippy vibe, organic cafes, and local art.
Murchison: The “whitewater capital” of the region, popular for kayaking and jet boating on the Buller River.
