Hawke’s Bay Region


Hawke’s Bay (often spelled with the apostrophe) is New Zealand’s premier food and wine destination. Located on the east coast of the North Island, it is famous for its Mediterranean climate, Art Deco architecture, and world-class vineyards.


The Art Deco Capital: Following a devastating earthquake in 1931, the twin cities of Napier and Hastings were largely rebuilt in the popular style of the era.

  • Fruit Bowl of New Zealand: The fertile Heretaunga Plains produce a massive portion of the country’s apples, pears, and stone fruit (peaches, plums, and nectarines).
  • Mission Estate: Established in 1851, it is the oldest winery in New Zealand and remains a landmark for both its history and its concert series.

  • Te Mata Peak: Rising 399 meters above sea level, the “Sleeping Giant” offers spectacular 360-degree views of the Heretaunga Plains, the coast, and the Ruahine Ranges. It is a sacred site for local Māori (Ngāti Kahungunu).
  • **Cape Kidnappers (Te Kauwae-a-Māui): Home to the world’s largest accessible mainland gannet colony. It also features one of the most dramatic and highly-rated golf courses in the world.
