The Marlborough Region is the sunny gateway to the South Island, and if you’re coming from Auckland, it’s a total change of pace. It’s a place where the mountains literally meet the sea in a maze of sunken valleys. Here’s the breakdown of why it’s “epic”
The Marlborough Sounds: This is a massive network of sea-drowned valleys (Queen Charlotte, Kenepuru, and Pelorus Sounds).
The Queen Charlotte Track: A 72km legendary trail you can hike or mountain bike. It’s famous because you can stay in luxury lodges along the way and have your heavy bags boated from one stop to the next.
The Mail Boat: One of the coolest ways to see the Sounds is to hop on the official Pelorus Mail Boat as it delivers mail and supplies to remote residents who only have water access.
Wildlife: It’s a sanctuary for dolphins, seals, and the rare King Shag. You can even kayak with stingrays in some of the shallower bays.
World-Class Wine: Marlborough is the undisputed wine capital of New Zealand, producing about 75–80% of the country’s wine.

Aviation & History
Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre: Even if you aren’t a “plane person,” this is incredible. It features Sir Peter Jackson’s (of Lord of the Rings fame) personal collection of WWI and WWII aircraft, set in movie-grade dioramas created by Weta Workshop.
Havelock: Known as the “Greenshell Mussel Capital of the World.” If you like seafood, stopping here for a pot of fresh mussels is a rite of passage.
Key Logistics
The Hubs: Picton is the picturesque port town where the ferry from Wellington arrives. Blenheim is the larger inland town, serving as the base for wine lovers.
Getting There: You can fly into Blenheim from Auckland in about 90 minutes, or take the iconic Interislander ferry from Wellington to Picton for one of the most beautiful boat rides in the world.
