Nelson Region

Nelson is the sunshine-soaked neighbor to the Tasman region. While they share a coastline, Nelson (Whakatū) is technically a distinct city and unitary authority. It is the oldest city in the South Island and serves as the sophisticated, artistic hub of the upper South Island.

The Sunshine Capital: Nelson consistently rivals the Tasman region for the title of New Zealand’s sunniest spot. This reliable weather has shaped the local lifestyle—heavy on outdoor dining, mountain biking, and sea kayaking.

The Artistic Soul: Nelson has a reputation for being the “artistic heart” of New Zealand.

  • The Suter Art Gallery: One of the country’s oldest and most prestigious regional galleries.
  • World of WearableArt (WOW): Although the massive annual show now takes place in Wellington, it started in Nelson. The city still hosts the WOW Museum, which displays incredible award-winning garments alongside a world-class collection of classic cars.
  • Local Artisans: The Nelson Market (held every Saturday) is legendary. It’s the best place to find local pottery, bone carving, and high-end glasswork.

“The Centre of New Zealand”: One of the most popular walks in the city leads to the top of Botanical Hill.

  • The Landmark: At the summit sits a monument marking the “Centre of New Zealand.”
  • The Reality: While it was the central survey point in the 1800s, modern GPS shows the actual center is about 60 km away in the Tapawera forest. However, the view from the hill over the city and Tasman Bay is still unbeatable.

Coastal Beauty: Tahunanui Beach is the city’s playground. It’s a vast, shallow beach perfect for paddleboarding, kite surfing, or just a long walk. The surrounding area is packed with “real fruit” ice cream stalls and seaside cafes.

Gateway to Adventure: While Nelson is an urban center, it is the jumping-off point for three National Parks (Abel Tasman, Nelson Lakes, and Kahurangi).

  • Boulder Bank (Te Pokohiwi): A unique 13 km long natural spit of boulders that protects the Nelson Haven. You can walk along it to reach the historic Nelson Lighthouse.
  • Mountain Biking: Nelson is a world-class destination for riders, featuring steep, technical trails right on the edge of the city at Codfish Hill and The Brook.

Economy & Industry

  • Port Nelson: The largest fishing port in Australasia. If you’re eating New Zealand seafood, there’s a good chance it was processed here.
  • Hops & Beer: Like Tasman, Nelson is a craft beer mecca. The region grows 100% of New Zealand’s commercial hops, and the city has the highest number of craft breweries per capita in the country.
